My life sits at the intersection of documentary photography, ethnographic and narrative research, and facilitation. I am interested in questions of home, belonging, and identity. I have explored topics ranging from: the lived experiences of homeless individuals; to the community response to HIV in Canada and Haiti; to place-making in informal settlements in South Africa. I have enriched my practice by using digital storytelling and arts-based methods to expand the possibilities for dialogue (See: https://pieterdevos.ca)
As a change agent, my work blends social innovation, human-centred design, and community organizing with developmental evaluation approaches. I have facilitated workshops and social labs using these methods in Canada, South Africa, Kenya, Sweden, Tanzania, Pakistan, Haiti, and the USA.
I am one of the Principals in Eval Lab, an attempt to increase the strategic learning and evaluative thinking capabilities of civil society organizations and networks. (See: www.evallab.ca )
I am also stewarding a human-centred design process to bring patient voice into Primary Health Care. (See: http://collaborationforchange.ca/ )
PIETER IS A NETWORK WEAVER BECAUSE…
As former community organizer, I am passionate about the creative potential that occurs when people mobilize around shared aspirations.
In my experience, social change is more likely to occur when we can harness diverse talents and experiences around common interests.
I am looking forward to the opportunity to learn from others and to expand our collective imagination.
